Special Testing Arrangements

At OET, we understand that our candidates may face unique challenges, and we’re here to ensure everyone has an equal opportunity to demonstrate their English proficiency.

Our Special Testing Arrangements are designed to support individuals with diverse needs. Whether you have a permanent disability like hearing or sight impairments, dyslexia, speech impediments, or temporary conditions such as a broken arm, we will accommodate your needs.

We provide specialised services beyond traditional testing norms to ensure a fair and accessible test. Here are our available special testing arrangement options:

  • Enhanced test accessibility and extra time accommodations: We provide administrative arrangements, which include extra time, supervised breaks, and assistance with reading or writing. These arrangements aim to make the testing process accessible to all candidates with special needs. Extra time is specifically provided for candidates with medical conditions or those requiring infant feeding breaks, with the duration of extra time tailored to the specific condition, ensuring fairness in the testing experience.
  • Modified test materials: We provide modified test materials tailored to the specific needs of candidates, ensuring that they have the best opportunity to perform on test day.
  • Enlarge print or Braille papers: We provide candidates with visual impairments access to Enlarge print or Braille papers for Listening, Reading and Writing subtests. We also offer print or braille papers for the speaking tasks to enable candidates to complete the test effectively.
  • Special listening CDs: We offer specialised listening CDs with necessary stops and pauses, catering to candidates who require this assistance.
  • Lip-reading versions: For the Listening test, we provide lip-reading versions, further expanding accessibility for candidates with specific needs.
Here’s how to request Special Testing Arrangements

Inform us when booking your test: Please inform OET of any requirements at the time of booking.

Provide us with supporting documents: Please provide us with supporting documents written in English, within three days from booking your OET Test along with your request. The supporting documentation should bear the official letterhead of the medical clinic, and each page must include the practitioner's stamp. It is important to note that the supporting document(s) must explicitly outline the medical condition and its relevance to the accommodation request. Providing such documentation is crucial as it aids us in gaining a comprehensive understanding of your specific needs, thus allowing us to tailor appropriate accommodations.

Our review and approval process: Our team will carefully evaluate your request and accompanying documentation. While we strive to process requests with the utmost efficiency, we strongly advise submitting your request well in advance of your test date to ensure a timely response and the best chance of accommodating your needs for your intended test date. In certain cases, if necessary to accommodate your requirements, your test date may be rescheduled.

Test day arrangements: Once your request is approved, we’ll work with you to coordinate the necessary accommodations for your test day. This may include modified test formats, extended time, or other adjustments based on your specific needs.

We aim to provide specialised services for your needs, but we recognise that individual circumstances and available resources may impose limitations. We are fully committed to ensuring fairness and accessibility for all candidates. If you encounter unique challenges, we encourage you to reach out and discuss your specific requirements with us, whether it's during the initial booking process or for unforeseen circumstances that may arise.

What to do if you’re not satisfied with the arrangements offered

If you're not satisfied with the accommodation provided and believe your reasonable adjustment may not have been adequately addressed, you may submit a general complaint as per the test regulations section 12. We'll provide you a decision on the complaint, and if this still does not address your needs, you may apply for an appeal.
