Faces of care: our nurses, their journeys, their impact

 

On this International Nurses Day, we join the global celebration of nurses — the dedicated, compassionate professionals who care for others, often crossing borders to do so. Under the International Council of Nurses’ 2025 theme, "Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for nurses strengthens economies," we recognise that supporting nurses is not just a moral duty, but a critical investment in healthier societies and stronger economies. 

At OET, we see first-hand how internationally educated nurses transform lives across the globe. We are proud to celebrate their journeys, their resilience, their contributions and to stand with them as partners in care. 

 

Empowering nurses through meaningful support 

 
The International Council of Nurses (ICN)’s message is clear: without healthy, supported nurses, healthcare systems cannot thrive. Yet many nurses face immense challenges, from unsafe staffing levels to burnout and low wages. OET believes in empowering nurses by opening doors to international careers, helping them thrive in diverse healthcare environments, and supporting their confidence to deliver person-centred care. 
 
OET is more than a test. It’s a bridge. One that connects nurses to new opportunities, while keeping them grounded in their profession. Unlike general English exams, OET is healthcare-specific, designed to reflect the communication nurses use daily. This focus not only helps nurses meet official language requirements but also prepares them for the realities of working in English-speaking healthcare systems. 
 
As the ICN rightly states, “Supporting nurses is not only a moral imperative but also a strategic investment in global well-being and economic stability.” By supporting nurses, we contribute to more resilient healthcare systems and healthier populations. 
 
Through initiatives like our Living the Language Workshops, and our advocacy for issues like linguistic challenges and speaking up in the workplace, OET plays an active role in highlighting and addressing key concerns that affect nurses' well-being and success. We celebrate not just the achievement of passing a test, but the confidence and readiness nurses gain for the road ahead.
