"OET will not only help you pass your English test but also prepare you for the day-to-day realities of healthcare communication. It’s absolutely worth it."
Chioma Enwereji, a compassionate midwife originally from Nigeria, has always been passionate about helping others. "From the beginning, caring for people has been my talent — my vocation," she shares. Her journey to mastering English and excelling in her healthcare career has been nothing short of inspiring, with OET playing a pivotal role in her success.
A lifelong dedication to care
Chioma’s career began with nursing, later specialising in midwifery — a profession that she describes as "a fantastic opportunity to welcome new life and provide one-to-one care for mothers at their most vulnerable." Her dedication shines through her words: "Seeing people who are in pain return to their normal life once again is my greatest reward."
To further her career, Chioma moved to the UAE, where she worked as a registered midwife. While living and working in the UAE, she was recruited by the Devon Alliance and successfully deployed to the UK
In line with the UK's Code of Practice for the international recruitment of health and social care personnel, the Devon Alliance ensures that all international recruitment is conducted ethically and transparently. This includes adhering to principles that promote high standards of practice and protect the rights of international health and social care personnel.
Discovering OET: a game-changer in English testing
As part of the requirements for her registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) in the UK, she needed to pass an English language test. Chioma initially encountered OET through colleagues. Having attempted IELTS without achieving her desired score, she turned to OET. Encouraged by peers, she joined a preparation centre that introduced her to the test’s healthcare-specific modules and format.
What stood out to Chioma was OET’s relevance: "The speaking part felt like I was actually caring for a patient. It mirrored real-life scenarios, with the examiner acting as the patient and me as the healthcare professional." This connection to her daily work as a midwife made her learning journey both practical and engaging.
Perseverance pays off
Despite initial challenges — particularly with the reading sub-test — Chioma’s resilience never wavered. She kept refining her skills, eventually achieving success and advancing her career.
