Turning challenges into opportunities: Patricia’s path to nursing

Navigating the path to a fulfilling career in the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) from your native country is no simple feat. Patricia Simon, an internationally trained nurse, shares her compelling story of how she embraced change and opportunity to achieve her dream role with the support of the OET Test.

A career based on care and growth

Patricia’s dedication to healthcare began during her university studies, where she initially pursued science laboratory technology.  However, her passion for direct patient care led her to switch to nursing. "I felt I needed something more to connect with people. I love caring," Patricia says, reflecting on her decision to attend nursing school.

Patricia’s aspiration to work with the NHS drove her to the United Kingdom. "Working with the NHS has always been my dream. The NHS offers room for career progression and top-notch professional development," she notes. The transition, however, was challenging. "Leaving my family behind and arriving in the UK, the first thing that hits you is the cold," Patricia recalls. The support of friends and colleagues was instrumental in making her relocation smoother.

OET’s contribution to success

Choosing the right English language test was a crucial step for Patricia. She found the OET Test more relevant to her profession than IELTS. "OET was going to be easier for me because it relates directly to what we do at work," Patricia explains. The test’s focus on healthcare tasks, such as writing referral letters, aligned perfectly with her nursing experience and prepared her well for her role in the UK.

After successfully registering, Patricia began her nursing career at a care home before moving to the Royal London Hospital, part of the NHS. "I’m now practising as a nurse with current registration in the UK board," she says proudly. Patricia’s role at the hospital allows her to continue growing professionally. "The NHS provides endless learning opportunities and career progression," she adds.

Facing and overcoming challenges

Patricia acknowledges that relocating to a new country and starting afresh can be daunting. "The initial transition was tough. Leaving family behind and adjusting to a new environment was challenging," she admits. However, having a support network was crucial. "Thank God for supportive people. My friend, Theodora, really helped me settle in and made the journey easier," Patricia says.

For those considering a similar journey, Patricia offers motivating advice. "Don’t be afraid. Take that bold step, come up and look at the bigger picture," she encourages. She also highlights the value of support networks and community. "Joining a support group or forum where you can share experiences is incredibly helpful," Patricia advises.

Looking forward

Today, Patricia thrives in her role at the Royal London Hospital, driven by her passion for patient care and professional development. "I enjoy my work, and despite the initial challenges, I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve had," she reflects. Her success story underscores the effectiveness of the OET Test in helping healthcare professionals achieve their career goals.

Patricia Simon’s journey to a successful career with the NHS is a powerful example of determination and the impact of the right tools and support.
