From Kenya to the UK: Brenda's inspiring journey with OET

"Passing OET was the best gift I could ever give myself."

Brenda Opiyo, originally from Kenya, has always been driven by a deep passion for nursing. Now working as a staff nurse in the wards of Highgate Private Hospital in London, Brenda’s path to fulfilling her dream was shaped significantly by her decision to take the OET Test. Here's her inspiring story.

A lifelong dream

From a young age, Brenda aspired to be a nurse. “When I was growing up, I had that passion within me. I used to admire the nurses' uniforms when my mom took me to the hospital,” she recalls. Her dream carried her through nursing training in Kenya, where she completed a diploma in nursing and gained over a decade of experience before deciding to work abroad.

For Brenda, nursing is about more than just providing care; it’s about making a difference in people’s lives.

What I love most in this field is just being empathetic to the patients, especially those unable to do their daily activities. Helping them motivates me and makes me happy. I just want to make them feel comfortable and happy,” she says.

Overcoming the challenge of English language tests

Even during her college years, Brenda had ambitions about practicing overseas. Financial constraints and limited guidance initially delayed her plans, but with determination, she found her way. Her husband, also a nurse, moved to the UK first, paving the way for her to join him. Brenda’s choice of the UK over other countries was strategic: “The pathway to the UK was easier and more affordable compared to Australia or the US,” she explains.

Proving her English proficiency, however, proved to be a significant challenge. Brenda attempted IELTS five times but struggled to achieve the required Band 7 score, particularly in the listening section. “I used to pass other sections, but listening was always 6.5. It was frustrating and exhausting,” she says.

After these setbacks, Brenda decided to try the OET Test, a test designed specifically for healthcare professionals. This decision transformed her journey.

“I told myself, ‘Let me try OET,’ and it was the best decision I ever made. The content was relevant to my nursing career, and I passed.”

The OET difference

What stood out to Brenda was how the OET Test aligned with her professional background. This practical relevance not only made preparation easier but also boosted her confidence in achieving success.

Brenda prepared for the test through an OET Test preparation partner based in Kenya - ELTester Consultants. “We prepared for six weeks, and the personalised guidance made all the difference,” she recalls. After completing her preparation, Brenda took the test at a centre in London.

Passing the OET in May 2022 was a transformative moment for Brenda.

“It was a miracle. I cried. It was the best gift I could give myself.”

Getting her UK nursing PIN

With her OET Test results, Brenda secured her Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) PIN in July 2022. This milestone allowed her to transition from working as a healthcare assistant to practicing as a registered nurse. She credits the support of her colleagues and managers for helping her navigate the challenges of moving into her new role.

Advice to aspiring nurses

Brenda’s message to other healthcare professionals is clear:

“I would advise and encourage them to go for OET. It’s easier, more relevant to our nursing careers, and worth the investment. At the end of the day, it’s something you’re sure you can pass, so why not?”

Brenda Opiyo’s story is a testament to how OET empowers healthcare professionals to achieve their dreams and advance their careers.
